The easiest way to search for local businesses online is to simply use a search engine and type in the kind of business that you are looking for and the name of the city that you are looking for that business in. This should give you results that are mainly local to the area that you searched for. This does work fairly well but there are going to be results that aren't actually local. Unfortunately there are quite a few webmasters who will manipulate their sites so that they appear in the results when you search for a local business even if they aren't local.
The other way that you can use a search engine to find local businesses is to take advantage of the local search capability that now exists. Most of the search engines have put a great deal of effort into making sure that you get results that are relevant to you. One way they do this is by actually getting the address of the businesses related to what you are searching for and then displaying results based on how far they are from where you live. These results will appear on at the top of the search results. You will see a section that says "local results" and it will give you a list of a couple of businesses. You can then click on the link that says more local results to get the whole list.
A third option that you have to search for local businesses is to use a local directory. There are lots of these sites that will allow companies to list themselves on the local directory. This is basically an online Yellow Pages. This is the old fashioned way of finding local businesses online but it does still work. The only issue that you are going to have to deal with is that it can be a little bit time consuming since you will have to scroll through quite a few results.

The search engines have figured out that people are usually looking for results that are local to them and have made real strides in making that happen. Really it has gotten to the point that you just have to search for the type of business you are looking for and the search engine will figure out where you live and provide you with results that are local.
